Indie dog adoption drive: Special Independence Day event in Hyderabad

Dog Adoption

Hyderabad: Citizens for Animals Shelter in Nallakunta, Hyderabad, is hosting an Indie adoption drive this Independence Day, August 15. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering residents a unique opportunity to find a furry friend in need of a forever home.

Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Shalini, the shelter’s communications and social media coordinator, shared insights into the event. “Our organisation, Citizens for Animals, is a registered NGO, and we have been organising Independence Day adoption drives since last year. We conduct these drives monthly, focusing on Indian street dogs,” she explained.

The shelter’s process involves fostering puppies to prepare them for adoption drives. “Our fosters take care of the puppies at their homes, preparing them for these events. This helps the puppies acclimate to being with their new families,” Shalini said.

Citizens for Animals operates with around 20 volunteers per adoption drive. “We handle registrations and ensure that all puppies have received their first vaccination. During the adoption drive, we offer free booster vaccinations, often administered by a veterinary doctor,” Shalini added.
Shalini shared a heartwarming memory of their rescue efforts. She said, “We have a mini rescue shelter for abandoned breeds. For instance, we once rescued a Shih Tzu-Apso crossbreed suffering from a severe maggot infection. After treatment, the puppy was adopted by one of our volunteers and found a loving family.”

Prominent individuals and celebrities have also supported the shelter’s adoption drives. Even if you are not ready to adopt, there are other ways to support the cause. “You can still contribute by making a donation for our rescued animals. We look forward to seeing you there!” she said.
