Chandrababu Naidu is India’s richest Chief Minister; Telangana CM leads in criminal cases
Hyderabad: According to a report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is the wealthiest Chief Minister in the country, with declared assets worth ₹931 crore.
Following Naidu is Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, with assets totaling ₹332 crore, while Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ranks third with ₹51 crore in declared assets. On the other end of the spectrum, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the least wealthy, with assets worth just ₹15 lakh.
Jammu and Kashmir’s Omar Abdullah declared assets of ₹55 lakh, and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared ₹1 crore. Chandrababu Naidu has liabilities of ₹10 crore.
The average declared assets of Chief Ministers across India stand at ₹52.59 crore. Of the 31 Chief Ministers analyzed, two are Chandrababu Naidu and Pema Khandu, are billionaires. The combined assets of all 31 Chief Ministers total ₹1,630 crore.
In terms of income, the average self-declared income of a Chief Minister is ₹13.64 lakh, which is 7.3 times higher than India’s per capita net national income of ₹1.86 lakh for the financial year 2023-24.
The report also sheds light on the legal issues faced by many of India’s state leaders. It reveals that 42% of Chief Ministers (13 out of 31) have declared criminal cases against themselves. Additionally, 32% of the Chief Ministers (10 out of 31) face serious charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and criminal intimidation.
When it comes to the number of criminal cases, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy leads the list with 89 declared cases. He is followed by Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin with 47 cases, and Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu with 32 cases.
