Indian fox found dead in road accident in Hanmakonda district

TELANGANA: A male Indian fox (Vulpes bengalensis), a Schedule II species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, was found dead in a suspected road accident early morning on January 20, 2026.

Incident reported on village road

The animal was found on the left side of the Guniparthi village–Shanigaram main road, near a church. The stretch falls under the jurisdiction of the Hanmakonda district forest division.

Local wildlife volunteers noticed the carcass during early morning hours and alerted forest officials, sharing the exact location for inspection and further action.

Protected species

The Indian fox is listed under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, which provides legal protection against hunting, killing, or trade. Any unnatural death of a protected species requires official documentation and procedure by the forest department.

Roadkill concern in forest fringes

Wildlife activists said road accidents involving animals have been reported frequently on roads passing through forest fringes and village outskirts, particularly during early morning and night hours when animal movement is higher.

They urged motorists to exercise caution on interior roads and near forested stretches to prevent such incidents.

Forest department alerted

Forest officials have been informed and are expected to follow standard protocol, including site inspection and disposal of the carcass, Team OWLS said.
