Incident-free New Year celebrations in Malkajgiri Commissionerate; 605 booked for drunk driving

HYDERABAD: New Year celebrations passed without major road accidents across the Malkajgiri Commissionerate limits, police said on Wednesday, crediting stepped-up enforcement and traffic safety measures.
As part of a special drive from December 31 night to the morning of January 1, 36 teams of the Malkajgiri Traffic Police conducted drunk-driving checks at multiple locations. A total of 605 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, and cases were booked against them.
Police said charge sheets would be filed and all accused would be produced before court in due course. Driving licences of those booked will be seized and forwarded to the respective Regional Transport Authorities for suspension under Section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Officials said around 230 offenders recorded alcohol levels exceeding 100 mg per 100 ml of blood, while eight registered readings above 300 mg. Most violations were detected in LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Uppal and Kushaiguda.
With extensive enforcement and traffic management plans in place, police reported no major road accidents anywhere in the commissionerate during the celebrations.
The Malkajgiri Police thanked citizens for cooperating with enforcement teams and said the special focus on drunk driving would continue as part of a “zero tolerance” policy to ensure road safety. Police also extended New Year greetings and urged the public to avoid dangerous behaviour on roads.
