IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain expected to occur at isolated places in the districts of Rangareddy, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, and Narayanpet in Telangana on Monday, September 23, 2024.

Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) are likely to occur at isolated places across all districts of Telangana.

According to Telangana Weatherman @balaji25_T, moderate fog was observed across Hyderabad this morning, with bright chances of strong thunderstorms later in the day. He issued a red alert warning of severe storms, stating, “As peak convergence is expected, today will see widespread powerful storms with lightning in red-marked districts over the next 24 hours.” Multiple storms are anticipated, with Hyderabad expected to experience several strong spells.

The red alert covers areas including Hyderabad, Medchal, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Narayanpet, Vikarabad, Yadadri, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Mulugu, Peddapalli, Bhupalapally, Karimnagar, Sircilla, Jagitial, Mancherial, Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Sangareddy, Hanmakonda, Siddipet, Medak, Jangaon.

The expected impacts due to heavy rains include water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, traffic congestion in most locations, wet and slippery roads, fallen trees and electric poles, disruptions to electricity and water supply, and drainage clogging. These disturbances may last for many hours.

The Telangana Weatherman noted that Hyderabad has experienced three consecutive days of heavy rain, particularly in the Old City areas. Overnight storms between 3 a.m. -5 a.m. were particularly intense.

In a related observation, today marks the autumn equinox, a significant astronomical event where day and night are nearly equal across the globe, heralding the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Malakpet in Charminar recorded the highest rainfall at 59.3 mm, followed by Bahadurpura at 58.0 mm and Santhoshnagar at 57.0 mm. The lowest rainfall was reported at 31.0 mm in LB Nagar, Saroornagar.
