Illegal phone tapping case Telangana

HYDERABAD: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged illegal phone tapping case during the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government entered a pivotal phase on Sunday as it questioned former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao for four hours and 45 minutes. The high-profile interrogation ignited a firestorm on social media, with the hashtag #Sajjanar trending nationwide in support of the probe’s lead officer.

The questioning, conducted at an undisclosed location, marks the first time the former chief minister has been formally interrogated in connection with the case. The SIT, led by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, is investigating accusations of widespread unauthorized surveillance of politicians, activists, journalists, and bureaucrats during the previous administration. The investigation has already led to the arrest of several senior police officials from the former Telangana State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), accused of carrying out the illegal monitoring.

Social media erupts in support Sajjanar

As news of the unprecedented questioning broke, social media platforms, particularly ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), saw an avalanche of posts applauding Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar and his team. The hashtag #Sajjanar quickly rose to the top of trends, reflecting significant public sentiment.

Thousands of users hailed the SIT’s move as a bold affirmation of institutional integrity and the rule of law. “Questioning a former CM shows that the law is blind to power and position. Salute to #Sajjanar and his team’s courage,” read one widely shared post.

Many netizens referenced V C Sajjanar’s past handling of sensitive cases, including the 2019 Disha encounter and the Warangal acid attack case, to express confidence in the current probe. The main theme of the online discourse was appreciation for what users called a no-nonsense, no-compromise approach to ensuring accountability.

The development is seen as a critical juncture in the politically sensitive case. The opposition has long alleged that the surveillance apparatus was used to suppress dissent and gain political advantage. Questioning the former chief minister is expected to intensify political debates in the state.
