Illegal medical shop raided in Falaknuma; Medicines worth Rs. 32,000 seized

Hyderabad: Acting on credible information, officials from the Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana raided an illegal medical shop in Nagulbanda, Falaknuma, Hyderabad, on 24 September 2024. During the raid, DCA officers discovered a significant stock of unauthorised medicines, including 23 varieties such as antibiotics, antihistamines, analgesics, and antipyretics. The total worth of the seized stock is approximately Rs. 32,000.
Mohammed Ayub Pasha’s shop was found to be functioning without a valid drug license.
Key officials involved in the operation included T. Rajamouli, Assistant Director, Hyderabad, and B. Lakshmi, Drugs Inspector, Charminar.
The DCA has collected samples for further analysis and stated that a thorough investigation will follow, with appropriate legal action planned against all offenders.
The DCA officials highlighted that wholesalers and dealers supplying medicines to unqualified individuals who are stocking and selling drugs without a license are also subject to penalties under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. They reiterated the importance of ensuring all recipients possess valid drug licenses before distributing medicines.
In a separate event, the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, raided a quack’s clinic and seized drugs stocked for sale in Konne Village, Bachannapet Mandal, Jangaon District. During this raid, DCA officials detected 34 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics and steroids, stocked at the premises without a drug license. The seized stock is valued at Rs. 20,000.
DCA officials found several higher-generation antibiotics at the clinic. The indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified persons poses serious risks to public health, including the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
Additionally, officials discovered steroids at the clinic. Misuse of steroids can lead to significant health issues, including immune system suppression, hormonal imbalances, muscle and bone weakness, cardiovascular problems, and psychological effects.
In another raid, DCA officials uncovered drugs falsely manufactured and marketed under the guise of food products or nutraceuticals.
In Sirpur, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad District, DCA officials detected Pedi Zinc Syrup (Zinc Gluconate Syrup), which was falsely labelled as a food product manufactured by Micro Nutritions, located at Exhibition Road, Hyderabad.
In Bhupalpally, the DCA seized Ferrorus-XT Tablets (Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, & Zinc Tablets), falsely marketed as nutraceuticals. These tablets were manufactured by Kencure Pharmaceuticals, S.N. Puram, Road No. 10, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, and marketed by Syrus Pharma, Shankara Kranthi Apartments, Kavadiguda, Hyderabad.
These products were falsely manufactured under a food license (FSSAI license), while their label composition classifies them as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. Such products must be manufactured under a valid drug license in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as outlined in Schedule M of the Drugs Rules. Additionally, they must meet quality standards prescribed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP).
Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, stocking and selling drugs without a license can lead to imprisonment for up to five years. The DCA encourages the public to report any suspicious drug manufacturing activities or illegal medicine sales by calling the Telangana Toll-Free Number 1800-599-6969, operational from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all working days.
