IIT Hyderabad plans third phase expansion

SANGAREDDY: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has initiated steps for its third phase of expansion, with Japan likely to extend ₹2,500 crore in financial assistance.
In the first two phases, modern buildings and laboratories were constructed with support from the Centre, the state government and corporate firms. Students and faculty have been carrying out research using advanced equipment.
Japan collaboration to drive next phase
Over the past few years, IIT Hyderabad has been collaborating with Japan on several research projects. The institute and Japanese partners have been sharing technology and working in coordination. Students of IIT Hyderabad are also being offered internship opportunities in Japan.
Sources said Japan has come forward to provide ₹2,500 crore for the third phase expansion. IIT Hyderabad director B S Murty is currently on a visit to Japan. The institute is likely to sign agreements with several organisations during the visit.
Expansion to increase seats, courses
IIT Hyderabad has secured improved positions in global rankings and established its presence in engineering education. With the expansion, student intake is expected to rise and new courses are likely to be introduced.
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, the institute secured the 664th position with a score of 26.4. It ranked 15th nationally in the 2024 edition and 17th nationally in the 2026 edition.
