HYDRA Prajavani hearing on lake protection and park development in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Several residents said environmental protection was possible only through HYDRAA, urging the agency to safeguard lakes, stormwater drains, government land, parks and sites earmarked for public use.

They said protecting and interlinking lakes was essential to prevent urban flooding. While HYDRAA was acting against encroachments on lakes and drains, residents urged it to also take up park development.

People sought the development of parks on vacant plots reserved for public utilities in layouts to improve green cover. They also demanded fencing of small government land parcels amid residential areas and their conversion into parks.

Residents of Nizampet sought fencing and park development on government land under Turka Cheruvu. In Medchal district’s Kapra mandal, locals complained that a park site in Venkat Reddy Colony at Chinna Cherlapally was being encroached upon and sought immediate HYDRAA intervention.

A total of 46 complaints were received during Monday’s HYDRAA Prajavani programme.

Complaints reviewed by commissioner

HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath reviewed the complaints and assigned officials to take up redressal.

Key complaints raised

Dump yard on land meant for public offices
Residents of Kandlakoya village in Medchal mandal, Medchal–Malkajgiri district, complained that government land earmarked for a court building, traffic police station and sub-registrar office had been turned into a dumping yard. They alleged that the Gundlapochampally municipality was dumping and burning garbage at the site, causing severe hardship to nearby colony and apartment residents. They said some hospitals were also dumping biomedical waste there. With the area dependent on borewells, residents feared groundwater contamination and complained of foul smell and smoke. They urged HYDRAA to protect the land and ensure a healthier environment.

Plots submerged in Ramanthapur lake
Residents complained that their plots had been submerged in Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu and sought either alternative land or suitable compensation. They said they had purchased plots in a gram panchayat layout in 1958 and that houses existed in the same layout, while only their plots were affected. They alleged that compensation promised during bund construction had not been paid. While supporting lake development, they demanded fair compensation.

Encroachment of parking areas in Rajiv Gruhakalpa housing
Residents of Janaram Colony in Kurumalaguda, Balapur mandal, Ranga Reddy district, complained that parking spaces in the Rajiv Gruhakalpa housing complex were being encroached upon. They alleged that some residents had converted parking areas into shops, while others had built additional rooms and rented them out, leading to parking shortages and traffic problems. They sought immediate clearance of encroachments.

Encroachments around Turka Cheruvu, Nizampet
Residents of Nizampet village in Bachupally mandal complained of encroachments on Turka Cheruvu and its bund. They alleged that large real estate firms had included adjacent government land in their plots and constructed compound walls. They said there was no objection to construction excluding government land and sought use of the 10 guntas of government land for public needs, including development of small parks.

Encroachment of flood canal between Ameenpur lakes
Locals complained that the flood canal connecting Ameenpur Pedda Cheruvu and Bandam Kommu Cheruvu was being encroached upon. They alleged that real estate firms were carrying out construction after occupying the nala, despite cases pending before the National Green Tribunal. They demanded a field inspection and removal of encroachments, saying flooding had worsened in their areas.
