HYDERABAD: The commissioner of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), AV Ranganath, has ordered strict action against dumping of earth within the full tank level (FTL) and buffer zones of lakes, directing that fencing be erected at all waterbodies to prevent further violations.

FTL violations under scanner

During field inspections at Mellacheruvu in Tellapur and Gandipet lake on Saturday, the commissioner took serious note of earth-filling that altered lake contours. Officials were told to ensure immediate removal of dumped soil by those responsible and to book cases if compliance was not met. At Mellacheruvu, local residents pointed out dumping within the FTL, following which directions were issued for its removal. At Gandipet, earth-filling on the Himayatnagar village side was flagged, with a 48-hour deadline issued and a further 24-hour extension granted on request.

The commissioner warned that any attempt to change the natural character of lakes would not be tolerated and said fencing would be installed to prevent fresh dumping across all lakes.

Park encroachments removed

In a joint operation with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Hydra removed encroachments from a park spread over more than two acres on Road No. 32 in Jubilee Hills (Circle 36). The action followed media reports of illegal structures within the park.

During a site visit, the commissioner ordered immediate removal of sheds erected by two adjoining households for a watchman and cattle, and directed officials to dismantle gates installed into the park. He also instructed the construction of a compound wall and installation of a main entrance to ensure public access. Local residents welcomed the swift action.

Bulkapur Nala to be revived

The commissioner also called for preparation of plans to restore the historic Bulkapur Nala, which carries rainwater to Hussain Sagar. Following complaints of encroachments near Manikonda, officials were asked to act to revive the nala from Bulkapur lake near Shankarpalli through Khanapur, Kokapet, Narsingi, Puppalaguda, Manikonda, Dargah, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, Pochamma Basti and Chintal Basti up to Hussain Sagar.

Restoration of the nala would help recharge groundwater across several localities, the commissioner said, adding that the waterway’s historical and hydrological importance warranted urgent protection.
