HYDERABAD: HYDRAA has decided to install CCTV cameras near lakes to prevent encroachments and strengthen surveillance. The authority plans to deploy cameras at 950 locations in the first phase.

HYDRAA will use its Lake Protection Force (LPF), which plays a key role in lake policing, for monitoring and security. Advanced CCTV systems will be installed at lake sites. In the coming days, the authority is also considering drone surveillance and geo-fencing mechanisms.

HYDRAA has been removing illegal constructions within Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zones to restore lakes. Of the six lakes taken up in the first phase, three have already been developed and opened to the public. In the second phase, 14 more lakes will be developed.

LPF deployment to expand across lakes

Officials said 248 LPF personnel are currently deployed across various lakes in the city, with higher concentration at the three developed lakes. The force will eventually be deployed at 17 lakes. Authorities have identified 950 locations for installing cameras.

Control rooms to monitor feeds continuously

The CCTV systems will operate on solar power and Internet Protocol (IP) technology. Feeds will be linked to Hydra’s control room at Ranigunj Buddha Bhavan and the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Banjara Hills. Officials will monitor footage round the clock and take necessary action.

Hydra is also planning to introduce drone teams and a geo-fencing alert system in the future.

Geo-fencing alerts to detect illegal activity

Officials are preparing plans to implement geo-fencing at key lakes. Consultations will be held with organisations, including the National Remote Sensing Agency.

Under the system, satellite data will map boundaries of lakes, parks and government land. Any attempt to encroach, fill land or undertake construction within the defined zone will be detected through geo-fencing alerts. The system will immediately notify the command and control centre and senior officials for prompt action.
