HYDRAA demolishes illegal structures around Bhagirathamma & Tautanikunta lakes in Nanakramguda

Hyderabad: In a recent crackdown on illegal construction, officials from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Management Authority (HYDRAA) demolished encroachments around the Bhagirathamma and Tautanikunta lakes on both sides of the Khajaguda-Nanakramguda Main Road on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
The demolition operation targeted illegal structures within the full tank level and buffer zones of the lakes. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath had visited the site last week after receiving complaints from local residents, leading to the inspections. Authorities confirmed that unauthorized sheds and makeshift buildings had been erected within the protected areas surrounding the lakes.
Nearly 10 encroachments were demolished, with the operation supported by officials from the Serilingampally Revenue authorities and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Earthmovers were used to remove the structures. Prior to the demolitions, notices had been issued to the encroachers. Authorities confirmed the recovery of government and pond lands, totaling 10 acres.
In the year 2024, HYDRAA has made significant progress in addressing urban encroachments, handling over 5,800 complaints related to illegal construction and the disappearance of lakes. The authority has also identified and is working to protect 1,025 water bodies within the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region (HMR). A key focus is marking Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries for lakes and mapping nalas with the help of advanced technology, including satellite imagery, drones, and aerial surveys.
Additionally, HYDRAA has successfully reclaimed around 200 acres of land by acting against encroachments in 8 parks, 12 lakes, and 4 government lands. Efforts are also underway to rejuvenate 12 lakes, including Sunnam Cheruvu in Guttalabegumpet, Errakunta in Bachupally, and Thammidikunta in Madhapur, which will aid in restoring groundwater levels and improving the ecological balance. The government is awaiting approval for the rejuvenation projects.
Looking ahead, HYDRAA’s 2025 roadmap includes expanding its network of Automatic Weather Stations to enhance weather predictions and setting up a technical division to monitor weather conditions and issue alerts. The authority is also planning to launch an FM radio channel to provide real-time weather updates and emergency alerts to the public.
