HYDRAA Revives Aghapura Nala, Removes 56 Truckloads of Silt
HYDERABAD: HYDRAA has cleared the Aghapura nala by removing 56 truckloads of silt and waste during a week-long drive. The work has restored the flow of stormwater through one of Hyderabad’s key flood channels.
Waste blocked floodwater flow
The Aghapura nala carries rainwater from Mehdipatnam, Vijayanagar Colony, AC Guards, Mallepally and Nampally to the Musi River. Years of dumped waste and silt had blocked the drain. This slowed the flow of water and increased the risk of flooding during heavy rain.
Workers removed discarded household items such as mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, chairs and rexine used in sofas. Photos and videos showing heavy silt near the Darussalam culvert went viral on social media. HYDRAA launched the desilting drive the very next day.
The drain was too narrow for heavy machinery. HYDRAA personnel and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams cleaned the nala by hand. The agency provided gloves, knee-length gumboots, masks and other safety gear. However, some workers were seen without protective equipment. This drew criticism on social media over their working conditions.
Officials oversee cleanup
HYDRAA continued the drive and removed 56 truckloads of silt in seven days. Teams also shifted the excavated waste immediately instead of leaving it at the site.
RFO Jayaprakash and SFO B. Charan Kumar supervised the desilting work every day.
Residents and commuters welcomed the cleanup. They said the restored nala will improve the flow of stormwater and help reduce flooding during the monsoon. Before-and-after photos and videos also show a clear improvement in the condition of the flood channel.
