HYDRAA begins ₹19-crore restoration of Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Thursday began restoration work at Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu in Uppal constituency, marking a major effort to revive the waterbody and improve its ecological functions.
Officials said the lake has a Full Tank Level (FTL) area of 30 acres. Over the years, nearly 16 acres were encroached upon. Following clearance operations, more than 18 acres have now been made available for restoration. Authorities said only temporary structures were removed and permanent constructions were not disturbed.
The restoration project is estimated to cost around ₹19 crore. Officials said the initiative is expected to enhance the lake’s storage capacity, improve groundwater recharge and strengthen flood management in surrounding localities.
As part of the exercise, around 36 families living in temporary huts near the lake have been relocated to double-bedroom houses provided by the state government.
The restoration is part of ongoing efforts to protect and rejuvenate waterbodies in Hyderabad amid concerns over encroachments, urban flooding and declining groundwater levels.
