Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner AV Ranganath made a surprise visit to Kamuni Cheruvu and Maisamma Cheruvu near Allapur on Tuesday and inspected the recent encroachments into the land of water bodies. He directed officials to protect the lakes and address encroachments in these lakes.

Setting the date July 2024 as the cutoff period, the Commissioner emphasized that only structures built after this period will be demolished. He added that structures predating this date, regardless of their legal status, will not be touched, providing relief to the residents of Raghavendra Colony.

After an inspection of the area, Commissioner Ranganath issued directives to officials to clear new encroachment and ensure the protection of lake bunds which were accidentally removed while clearing the weeds from the water bodies by the GHMC team.

At the same time, he advised Vasavi Sarovar to halt their construction work until a mandatory 17-metre-wide nala is built to ensure proper water flow between Kamuni Cheruvu and Maisamma Cheruvu.

Meanwhile, both HMDA and GHMC are trying to make the area around the lakes walkable for the local residents. HMDA is developing the walking track around the water body while GHMC team is removing the water hyacinth weeds from the lakes with the help of earth movers and lorries. The civic officials have assured that the lake bunds will be restored soon.

Last week, HYDRAA Commissioner was seen interacting with the locals residing near the Kuntloor Pedda Cheruvu under the Pedda Amberpet Municipality. The locals had sent several complaints to the agency and requested the officials visit to inspect the alleged encroachments in the buffer zone of the water body and also assess the construction of a road in the area.

Commissioner Ranganath and the team of officials inspected the lake and encroachments. The Commissioner assured them the agency will carry out a detailed survey of the water body to assess the extent of encroachments and subsequently take appropriate measures based on its findings to address the concern.
