Sunnam Cheruvu lake in Hyderabad amid FTL boundary controversy

HYDERABAD: A V Ranganath on February 25 said the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits of Sunnam Cheruvu and other lakes will not be altered once fixed.

He said the FTL boundary of Sunnam Cheruvu was finalised in 2014 and development works are being carried out accordingly. He rejected allegations by Madhavaram Krishna Rao that HYDRAA was excluding up to five acres to benefit certain individuals.

The commissioner clarified that fencing done earlier by including government land near the lake does not apply to the lake’s FTL limits. He said HYDRAA is acting strictly within the FTL boundary as per High Court orders.

If government land is found adjacent to the lake, it will be resumed and developed into parks and play areas, he added.

40% complaints from Kukatpally zone

Ranganath said government land was resumed and developed at Thammidikunta in Madhapur and at six lakes taken up in the first phase.

He said Krishna Rao had earlier supported HYDRAA’s actions but was now making personal allegations. The reasons behind the change were unclear, he added.

The commissioner said higher land values or other factors could be the reason why a large number of complaints about encroachment of government land were coming from Kukatpally zone. Around 40% of complaints received by HYDRAA are from this zone, he said.

HYDRAA has so far removed encroachments at 1,240 locations and protected 1,310 acres of government land. Many of those involved were influential persons, he said.

He said HYDRAA works beyond politics and does not favour anyone. Its mandate is to resume government land, while the government decides its utilisation.

At Gajularamaram village in Qutbullapur mandal, nearly 300 acres of resumed government land were allocated to departments for public use, including social welfare schools and government offices.

Similarly, in Kondapur of Serilingampally mandal, seven acres protected by HYDRAA were allocated to government educational institutions and for park development, he said.

The commissioner said protecting lakes, drains, parks and land meant for public use is the government’s objective to build an environmentally sustainable city. Every action of HYDRAA is aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life, he added.
