HYDRAA likely to get fire safety seizure powers

HYDERABAD: The state government is likely to soon grant the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) powers to seize buildings that violate fire safety norms. At present, these powers rest with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
In recent weeks, HYDRAA, along with GHMC officials, has carried out seizures of buildings found to be non-compliant with fire safety regulations. However, officials said HYDRAA already plays a key role in fire safety oversight.
Fire safety approvals and response roles
For buildings up to 18 metres in height, HYDRAA issues fire safety no-objection certificates (NOCs), while structures taller than that require clearance from the Fire Services Department. These agencies also play a crucial role during fire incidents.
HYDRA recently wrote to the state government seeking formal powers to seal buildings that lack mandatory fire safety measures. The agency cited a series of recent fire accidents and said seizure powers would strengthen prevention efforts.
Government likely to approve proposal
Sources said the government has responded positively to the proposal and is likely to issue clarity on the matter soon. With GHMC’s jurisdiction now extending up to the Outer Ring Road, and HYDRAA’s operational area covering the same region, officials believe granting seizure powers to HYDRA could help reduce fire accidents.
Awareness drive underway
Meanwhile, HYDRAA has launched a fire safety awareness programme in the city, which will continue until the end of this month. Officials are educating residents, vehicle owners and staff on precautions to prevent fires, steps to control flames during an incident, and methods to minimise loss of life and property.
Demonstrations include the use of fire extinguishers, functioning of water sprinklers, and the importance of smoke detectors. Officials said strict enforcement will follow the awareness drive. Granting seizure powers to HYDRA, they added, could further strengthen fire accident prevention.
