Hyderabad Old City Infrastructure Issues

Hyderabad: Residents of Hyderabad’s Old City are facing a lot of problems due to poor maintenance, including potholed roads, damaged manholes, stagnant water, unattended garbage, incomplete roadworks, and uneven dividers. They have demanded intervention from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to address the deplorable state of infrastructure in the area.

Roads throughout the Old City, in areas like Mir Alam Mandi, Moghalpura, Chaderghat, Sha Ali Banda, Panjeshah, Hari Bowli, and Dar-ul-Shifa, are riddled with potholes, creating a hazardous driving experience. The presence of damaged manholes further jeopardizes the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike. Inadequate drainage exacerbates the problem, leading to water pooling after rainfall, which not only breeds mosquitoes but also increases the threat of mosquito-borne diseases. The accumulation of uncollected garbage adds to the unsanitary conditions and overall unpleasant environment in the area.

While speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, M.A. Ahmed, a resident of the Old City, highlighted the problems. “These issues are all interconnected,” he explained. “The terrible roads, full of potholes and with damaged manholes, can lead to accidents and even fatalities. When it rains, the water stagnates, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and spreading diseases. The garbage on the streets adds to the mess and isn’t cleared regularly.”

Ahmed further highlighted the inconvenience caused by unfinished roadworks. “Some roads have been dug up and left unpatched, making it very difficult for commuters like myself to navigate. The uneven dividers only add to the traffic congestion.”

Residents have urged the authorities to take immediate action and implement permanent solutions to address these issues. They have requested that the GHMC prioritize the repair of roads, improve drainage systems, ensure proper garbage collection, and complete roadwork projects promptly.
