Hyderabadi man trapped in Russia after job scam, family seeks rescue

HYDERABAD: In a chilling twist of fate, Mohammed Ahmed, a young man from Hyderabad, is now stranded and wounded in Russia, facing the terrifying prospect of being forced into battle against the Ukrainian army after being deceived by the job promise. With desperation mounting, Afsha Begum from Hyderabad has made a heartfelt appeal to the Government of India, begging for the swift rescue of her husband, Mohammed Ahmed who was trapped in Russia.
According to the family of Ahmed, the sole breadwinner and resident of M.S. Maqta near Raj Bhavan, he was approached in early 2025 by a Mumbai-based consultancy, Trust, and promised a job in Russia. Relying on this, Ahmed left India on April 25, 2025, with a valid passport in hand.
In her formal letter from M.S. Maqta, Afsha Begum outlines the events following Ahmed’s arrival in Russia in late April 2025. He found no employment for nearly a month. In late May, Ahmed and approximately 30 others, including six Indians, were taken to a remote location and forced to undergo weapons training.
“He was promised a construction job, but faced a battlefield,” said a family member. The situation worsened when Ahmed and 25 others were taken to the border area to face the Ukrainian army. Attempting to escape, Ahmed jumped from a moving military vehicle, fracturing his right leg but avoiding immediate combat.
The letter reports significant casualties among Ahmed’s group. According to Afsha Begum, her husband stated that nearly 17 individuals from his group have died in fighting. He now faces an ultimatum from his captors to either fight or face death.
Call for Help
In a video message, Ahmed said he is under immense pressure from his captors, who have threatened to kill him if he refuses to fight. In Hyderabad, Ahmed’s family, including his paralyzed mother, wife, and two children, Zoya (10) and Mohammed Taimur (4), remain deeply concerned for his safety.Afsha Begum has appealed to External Affairs Minister(EAM) S. Jaishankar for help from the Indian Embassy in Moscow. She wants the embassy to reach out to her husband, help rescue him, and make sure he returns to India quickly and safely. She emphasized the urgency of the situation.
“Their world has collapsed. He is the only earner, and now they fear for his life every second,” said Amjed Ullah Khan, Spokesman of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT). After watching Ahmed’s video, Khan visited the family and informed the Indian government about their situation. He pointed out the serious danger to Mohammed Ahmed’s life due to the scam and asked the External Affairs Minister to intervene quickly.
