Hyderabad hosts Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers

HYDERABAD: India will face Uruguay in the opening match of the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers at the Gachibowli stadium on Sunday.
India begins campaign against Uruguay in Hyderabad qualifier
The match marks the first major test for the Indian women’s team after the coach resumed responsibilities. India, ranked ninth in the current world rankings, will aim to begin the tournament with a win.
Among the teams competing in the qualifiers, only England, ranked seventh, are placed higher than India. Against Uruguay, the Salima Tete-led side enters the match as the favourite.
Three World Cup spots available through qualifier tournament
Other matches scheduled on Sunday include England vs Italy, Korea vs Austria and Scotland vs Wales.
The Women’s Hockey World Cup will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands from August 14 to 30 this year. A total of 16 teams will compete, of which nine have already qualified.
The remaining three spots will be decided through the qualifiers. Teams finishing in the top three of the tournament will qualify for the World Cup.
