Hyderabad woman duped of Rs.1.44 Lakh in online food order scam
Hyderabad: A 38-year-old housewife from Hyderabad lost Rs.1.44 lakh in an online scam after placing a food order on the Zepto app.
The incident occurred when the victim placed a food order on the Zepto app and subsequently received a WhatsApp message from the scammer pretending to be a Zepto employee. The scammer later called her, advising her to verify her transaction by checking if her account had been debited.
The fraudster initiated a video call and persuaded her to verify her account details through a suspicious link. He also requested her to share her screen and click on an APK link. The victim opened the link, uploaded her personal data, and provided the requested information. Although she initially didn’t share any OTP or card details, the fraudster managed to hack her device during the video call.
After sharing her credit card information, she grew suspicious and quickly contacted her bank’s customer service to block further transactions. However, Rs.1.44 lakh had already been debited from her account by then. Later, the victim filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime police.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police have issued an advisory warning citizens against responding to threatening video calls claiming to be from authorities like CBI, RBI, ED, Customs, or Cyber Crime Police. They urged victims to report such frauds immediately by calling 1930.
