Hmwssb Officials Inspect Seized Private Water Tanker In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Changes in weather and rapid depletion of groundwater have led to a sharp rise in demand for water tankers in the city.

By the end of March, daily demand rose to 8,500 tankers. A month earlier, the average demand was below 5,000 tankers, indicating a steep increase within weeks.

Officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board have initiated measures to meet the rising demand. They estimate that the requirement may touch 10,000 tankers per day in April.

Borewells dry up in several residential areas

Demand is highest in areas such as Kondapur, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Ameerpet, Nizampet, Quthbullapur, Uppal and Malkajgiri, where over 50% of borewells have dried up.

Several apartment complexes have turned to private tankers due to limited access to public supply. The water board allows booking of only one tanker in 24 hours, prompting residents to depend on private suppliers.

Private tanker operators raise prices amid demand

Private tanker operators are fixing prices based on distance and demand. In some parts of the city, tanker prices have increased by ₹200.

Hostels, which rely heavily on borewells, are also increasingly dependent on tanker supply.

Key figures:

  • Daily tanker supply: 8,500
  • Water board tankers: 1,100
  • Filling points: 140
