Hyderabad faces tanker delays amid water shortage
HYDERABAD: The city is witnessing a surge in demand for water tankers as groundwater levels decline sharply, leading to significant delays in supply.
Since June 1, tanker deliveries in most areas are taking between two and four days. Residents are queuing up at Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) offices to secure bookings.
Officials said demand has risen sharply since Monday, with an average of 18,000 tankers being booked daily. Despite supplying around 13,000 tankers per day, nearly 25%–30% of orders remain pending.
The board had set a target of delivering tankers within 24 hours, but officials said the sharp rise in demand has made this difficult. Until May 30, nearly 95% of bookings were fulfilled within a day.
In Madhapur, tankers are arriving three days after booking. In Shaikpet, tankers booked on June 1 are yet to be delivered.
Between Sunday and Friday afternoon, 19,742 tanker bookings were pending, according to officials. Even tankers booked on Sunday remain undelivered in some areas.
Demand rises across city areas amid supply gaps
A similar situation prevails across the city, including Shaikpet, Rajendranagar, SR Nagar, Ameerpet, Vengal Rao Nagar, Moosapet, Somajiguda, Kondapur, Madhapur, Jubilee Hills, Kothapet, KPHB and Pragathi Nagar.
In areas such as SR Nagar, Somajiguda, Fatehnagar, Shivam and Domalguda, tankers booked on May 31 have not yet been supplied. Officials said nearly one-third of the city is facing such delays.
The water board is supplying tankers for about 18 hours daily through more than 1,100 vehicles operating from 100 filling points across 92 filling stations. However, pending orders continue to rise.
