Hyderabad water supply hit by Manjeera pipeline faults

HYDERABAD: Frequent repairs to the Singur and Manjeera pipelines, which supply drinking water to the city, are disrupting distribution across Hyderabad.
These projects supply 110 million gallons per day (MGD). Any disruption in a single pipeline halts water supply in nearly 20% of the city.
Repairs take up to 48 hours
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has identified the need to replace the decades-old pipelines. However, fund constraints have stalled progress.
Concrete pipelines were laid based on the technology available at the time. Many stretches have weakened. When water is pumped at full capacity, pipes burst and cause leakages.
Recently, a pipeline burst at Manikonda, triggering repair works. Officials said recurring faults are common in several stretches.
Repairs take at least 24 to 48 hours. Full restoration of supply may take up to a week.
Several areas affected
Water supply has been affected in Miyapur, Kukatpally, KPHB, Moosapet, Gachibowli, Manikonda, Serilingampally, Ramachandrapuram, Patancheru, SR Nagar and Ameerpet.
The board has estimated that laying a new Manjeera pipeline will cost ₹720 crore. It has submitted a proposal to the state government and is awaiting funds.
