Hyderabad: Water leakage wastes drinking water in areas

HYDERABAD: Drinking water is being wasted due to pipeline leakages in several parts of Hyderabad, with residents alleging that complaints remain unresolved.
At Alif Junction in Pragathi Nagar, a pipeline leak has been causing water wastage. Residents said they complained to local water board staff two months ago, but no action followed. When they approached the customer care centre, officials issued token number 6,130 but did not fix the issue.
Four days ago, residents filed another complaint and received token number 2,051. The leakage continues.
Complaints ignored as officials issue tokens repeatedly
Similar leakages are reported across multiple areas in the Greater Hyderabad limits. In many places, ageing pipelines are unable to withstand pressure. In core city areas, pipelines laid years ago are failing frequently, leading to repeated repairs.
Residents said authorities replace pipelines only at damaged spots and leave surrounding sections unchanged. This results in recurring leakages in nearby stretches.
Old pipelines, poor handling worsen leakage across city
Leakages are also attributed to the negligence of linemen during water supply operations. Officials found that valves are often turned beyond capacity, increasing pressure and causing pipelines to burst. Linemen are expected to regulate flow based on area requirements.
In Yakutpura, water is being wasted through a valve gate, highlighting gaps in maintenance.
Summer shortages worsen situation
Water scarcity has intensified across several localities during summer. With groundwater levels declining, borewells are failing, forcing residents to depend on water board supply.
In some areas, supply is inadequate, prompting residents to book additional tanker water. Despite this, officials have not acted promptly to prevent wastage or address leakages.
Residents said complaints are met with token numbers, but field-level staff fail to inspect or resolve issues.
