Hyderabad water demand rises as tanker bookings touch 5,000
HYDERABAD: Water demand has begun to rise in the city as daytime temperatures increase, prompting residents in several localities to depend on tankers.
At present, demand for tankers has started in nearly 30 areas, including Kondapur, Madhapur, Jubilee Hills, Hafeezpet, Miyapur, Gachibowli, Hitec City, SR Nagar, Yousufguda, Banjara Hills, Nizampet, Kukatpally and KPHB. Compared to last year, tanker bookings are about 10 per cent lower so far.
In January, around 3,000 tankers were booked daily. By the end of February, the number rose to 5,000 a day.
Groundwater levels fall in elevated areas
Water demand is higher in elevated localities and areas with multi-storey buildings and hostels. In several high-rise neighbourhoods, borewells have dried up as groundwater levels fall, forcing residents to rely on tankers.
Demand has also increased from hostels, co-living spaces and rental buildings, including OYO properties.
Water board readies summer plan
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has prepared micro-level plans division-wise in view of summer.
Officials aim to deliver tankers within eight hours of booking. More than 1,100 tankers are registered with the board. Authorities are ensuring there is no daily booking backlog.
At present, there are 84 filling stations and 134 filling points across the city. The board plans to increase these facilities based on demand.
Managing Director Ashok Reddy said tankers are currently being supplied in a single shift. “If demand increases, we will operate a second shift and, if required, supply tankers round the clock,” he added.
