Hyderabad Water Board fines firm for STP water discharge
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated action against establishments that discharge treated water from private sewage treatment plants (STPs) onto public roads without permission.
During inspections conducted on June 26, officials found that a commercial establishment on Road No. 82, Jubilee Hills, was releasing treated STP water onto a public road. The discharge led to waterlogging, causing inconvenience to commuters, disrupting traffic and creating unhygienic conditions.
Commercial establishment issued notice
The Water Board issued a statutory notice to the management, directing it to stop the discharge immediately and reuse the treated water in accordance with prescribed norms. It also instructed the establishment to submit a compliance report within 48 hours.
₹1 lakh penalty imposed
The Board imposed a ₹1 lakh penalty on the establishment for causing public inconvenience. It warned that failure to pay the fine within three days would invite additional penalties, suspension of drinking water and sewerage services, and legal action.
The Water Board also directed all residential, commercial, educational and industrial establishments operating STPs to reuse treated wastewater strictly as per regulations. It said stringent action would be taken against those found releasing treated wastewater onto public roads or other unauthorised locations.
