HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is set to undergo a major reorganisation on the lines of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, expanding its administrative structure to 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards.

Board finalises reorganisation on GHMC lines

The exercise, aimed at improving administrative efficiency after territorial expansion, has been completed. The water board plans to submit the proposal to the government for approval within a week after a final review.

As part of the restructuring, the board has increased the number of zones from five to 12. The number of circles has gone up from 59 to 60, while wards have been increased from 192 to 300. General manager division offices have been merged with zonal offices.

Coverage to extend beyond Outer Ring Road

The board’s jurisdiction, which was earlier limited to areas within the Outer Ring Road, has now been extended beyond it. This has increased the total coverage by about 603 sq km, taking the area from 1,450.2 sq km to 2,053.2 sq km.

At present, the water board operates a pipeline network of 12,304.63 km, with 6,56,042 water valves and 14,43,136 drinking water connections. The sewerage pipeline network spans 3,055.29 km, supported by 4,80,263 manholes. Daily drinking water supply stands at 588 million gallons per day.

Under the new structure, chief general managers will function as zonal heads. Each zone will have four to six circles, overseen by two general managers. Deputy general managers will head circles, each supervising four to five wards. Ward offices will be managed by ward officer managers. Transmission and project divisions will continue without change.

To improve public access, the board is considering setting up zonal, circle and ward offices within their respective jurisdictions. It is examining the possibility of housing these offices in existing GHMC building complexes to ensure they are locally accessible.
