Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar warns against marriage frauds

HYDERABAD: V C Sajjanar on Sunday warned of strict legal action against those cheating and blackmailing young women under the guise of marriage. Posting on X, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner said complaints have recently reached Hyderabad She Teams about harassment following engagements.
He said the cases involve not only love affairs but also arranged marriages fixed by families.
How the fraud unfolds
According to Sajjanar, the accused follow a plan. They first attend formal bride-viewing meetings and conduct engagements. After gaining the woman’s trust with the assurance that marriage is finalised, they seek physical intimacy through emotional pressure.
Once their objective is achieved, they demand large sums of money as additional dowry. They threaten to call off the wedding if the demand is not met.
Fear of social stigma delays complaints
With engagements already announced to relatives and friends, many women and their parents hesitate to approach the police fearing social stigma if the marriage is cancelled.
“Remaining silent out of fear of losing honour will lead to lifelong suffering. No one should be afraid. Come forward boldly,” Sajjanar said.
He advised families not to blindly trust arranged matches and to verify the groom’s behaviour, habits and background before marriage. Even after engagement, vigilance must continue until the wedding.
Women should refuse any pressure to meet privately or enter into physical relations before marriage. They should not fear threats or monetary demands, he added.
Victims can contact Hyderabad She Teams on WhatsApp at 9490616555 or dial 100. Police assured that complainants’ details will be kept confidential.
