Police escort accused Mahesh in Vanasthalipuram murder case

Hyderabad: Four-month pregnant Sunitha was murdered allegedly by her former husband in Vanasthalipuram. Her current husband, Udukula Srinath, told police that he was unaware of her earlier marriage.

Police arrested the accused, Mahesh, and questioned Srinath as part of the investigation.

‘We were waiting for our child’

Srinath told police that he met Sunitha in Begumpet in 2024. Their acquaintance turned into a relationship, and they married in April 2025 after convincing their families.

“I did not know she was earlier married to Mahesh. She was four months pregnant. We were happy that a baby would be born in five months. Suddenly, this happened,” Srinath said, breaking down before police.

He said his mother called him on Wednesday afternoon and informed him that someone had killed Sunitha. “I was shocked when I heard that she was murdered,” he said.

Past marriage and dispute

Police said Sunitha and Mahesh had been in a relationship since 2014 and married in 2022. In 2023, she travelled to Canada with him but returned to India within 10–15 days after a dispute, with the help of local police there.

She filed a domestic violence case against Mahesh and his parents and obtained a divorce in the presence of elders without pursuing court proceedings further. Police said Mahesh and his parents had to attend police stations and courts following the cases filed by her.

Mahesh’s mother later died of a heart attack. Police said Mahesh decided to leave India and return to Canada, but did not get a visa as the cases filed by Sunitha became an obstacle.

Investigators said Mahesh, angered over the developments, came to the address where Sunitha was staying and killed her. Police said they would file a chargesheet against the accused soon.
