HYDERABAD: Experts have warned that Hyderabad faces rising heat risks if authorities fail to take preventive measures, during an Urban Heat Data Jam held at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

The event was organised by OpenCity.in, an initiative of the Oorvani Foundation, with support from Uncharted Science, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Climate Front Telangana and Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union.

Participants analyse heat island impact

Geographic Information System specialists, students, engineers and citizens analysed data on the city’s heat island effect, declining green cover, industrial zones, garbage dumping yards and densely populated areas.

They discussed how heat intensity in areas such as Hitec City, Uppal, Borabanda, Gachibowli and Jawaharnagar is linked to socio-economic disparities.

Green zones show lower temperatures

Participants observed that areas with higher green cover and water bodies remain cooler, while neighbourhoods with dense construction face severe heat stress.

Organisers said the initiative would help urban local bodies take data-driven decisions to address the growing heat challenge.

Among those present were Professor Khaleeq, Vaidyanath, Srinivas, D B F Shankar, John Michael, researcher Praveen, engineering students, architects and experts from data research and allied fields.
