HYDERABAD: Underground cabling to replace overhead power lines

HYDERABAD: The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSSPDCL) has prepared proposals worth ₹14,000–₹15,000 crore to replace overhead electricity lines with underground cables across Hyderabad and adjoining zones.
DPRs ready for three zones
Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared for 10 circles across three zones under the Greater Hyderabad network. The project aims to gradually shift 11 kV overhead lines underground, following the model implemented in Bengaluru. Officials said field studies and feasibility assessments were completed, and final reports were submitted to headquarters.
33/11 kV network and existing capacity
Greater Hyderabad currently has 498 33/11 kV substations, 1,022 power transformers, and 1,50,992 distribution transformers. The city’s power infrastructure includes 3,725 km of 33 kV and 21,643 km of 11 kV overhead lines. Underground cabling presently covers 957 km.
Safety, reliability drive project
Officials said the move aims to improve system reliability and reduce accidents caused by exposed lines. Work will begin in high-risk and densely populated areas before expanding to other localities. The project also aligns with central government initiatives to strengthen power utilities.
