Hyderabad sees transformer failures surge in April

HYDERABAD: Power supply disruptions are causing inconvenience to residents across the city, as electricity demand rises sharply during summer.
Distribution transformers (DTRs) and power lines are coming under increased load, leading to frequent failures. In April alone, more than 1,079 DTRs reported technical faults, while several others were completely damaged.
Over 1,079 transformers report faults in one month
Data across circles shows Sangareddy recorded 339 transformer issues, followed by Rajendranagar with 296 and Cyber City with 130. Other affected areas include Saroornagar (95), Habsiguda (65), Medchal (62), Hyderabad South (29), Secunderabad (25), Banjara Hills (22), and Hyderabad Central (16).
In several locations, including Ramanthapur, transformers have been burning due to excessive load and voltage fluctuations.
Poor monitoring and overload trigger frequent outages
As part of the summer action plan, the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited introduced additional distribution transformers and new feeders across 10 circles to meet rising demand.
However, monitoring at the field level has weakened. Senior officials and superintending engineers have not been conducting regular inspections during peak demand periods. Earlier, officials carried out area-wise inspections, but such checks have declined in recent months.
Low voltage, excessive load, and lack of proper maintenance have led to transformers overheating, feeder tripping, and prolonged power cuts. In the Greater Hyderabad region, around 100 DTRs reported technical faults, resulting in supply interruptions lasting several hours.
Senior engineers remain office-bound
Despite record-high electricity demand during summer, some superintending engineers and divisional engineers remain confined to offices, with limited field supervision contributing to the ongoing issues.
