Hyderabad traffic police book 450 cases in crackdown on illegal number plates

HYDERABAD: On April 21, 2026, the Traffic Police of Malkajgiri Traffic Zone-I conducted a special enforcement drive and booked 450 cases against vehicles using illegal and improper number plates.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-I), Malkajgiri, K. Rahul Reddy supervised the operation. In addition, Assistant Commissioners of Police from Trimulgherry and Malkajgiri divisions actively monitored the drive, while inspectors, sub-inspectors and traffic staff carried out field checks.
During the drive, teams checked vehicles at major junctions and busy roads across Trimulgherry and Malkajgiri. They specifically targeted vehicles with fancy, tampered, obscured, or non-standard number plates.
Moreover, officials verified compliance with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), focusing on correct font, size, spacing, and visibility. When they found violations, they booked the vehicle owners under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
As a result, the police collected fines totaling ₹80,000. Furthermore, they filed chargesheets against 66 repeat offenders, including those who violated number plate rules for the third time as well as vehicles operating without plates.
Traffic officials explained that improper number plates make it difficult to identify vehicles involved in offences. Consequently, this weakens surveillance systems and affects road safety.
Therefore, authorities urged all vehicle owners to use only authorised High Security Registration Plates and to avoid any modifications. They also instructed owners to remove illegal or fancy plates immediately.
Finally, police warned that they will take strict action against repeat offenders and produce them before the court. In addition, they said similar enforcement drives will continue to ensure full compliance with traffic rules.
