Body worn cameras to drones to monitor traffic, proposed steps to ease traffic in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Traffic congestion is one of the major problems in the city of Hyderabad. And it becomes multifold, especially in the monsoon season with roads inundating with rain water. In order to find a solution to this pertinent problem, the Telangana DGP Jithendar along with the Commissioners of Hyderabad and Cyberabad conducted a review meeting to assess the present situation and also to come up with steps to find an answer.
While keeping the road safety as one of the prime concerns, there are certain aspects and proposals that the review meeting has come up with. If everything goes as planned, these steps are likely to be implemented in Telangana.
Signal Cycle optimization was proposed and the cycle time should not be exceeded more than three minutes at any junction, reducing the wait time for the commuters. It was also decided to focus on the compliance of Motor Vehicle Act provisions and rules to strive for traffic discipline.
Special app for Ambulance navigation
An application to be developed for Ambulance services for navigating through the traffic without getting stuck at junctions and in traffic jams. And during peak traffic hours, the Traffic police should only concentrate on traffic regulation and management and all officers and personnel should be on the roads.
Further body worn cameras to be given to the traffic police for better monitoring of the traffic. And usage of drones during events and to study the traffic flows and traffic congestion was also suggested.
The Traffic Engineering wing should be activated and strengthened. Empanelment of rate contract vendors for the procurement of traffic equipment by the districts using the eChallan funds.
It was also discussed coordinating with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for taking up the corrective measures during the non-monsoon period so that the four months rainy season goes off peacefully.
Some of the other steps include, proper and full usage of ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System), promoting measures like Carpooling and coordinating with the GHMC and other stakeholder departments for the completion of traffic engineering works, junction improvement, convergence works.
