HYDERABAD: Hyderabad’s notorious traffic congestion costs each commuter about 85 hours annually, according to a recent traffic analysis. Travelling a 10 km stretch takes nearly 31 minutes and 30 seconds on average.

Though the city fares better than Bengaluru and Chennai, poor road conditions, rapid growth in vehicle numbers, and weak traffic enforcement have led to worsening congestion, officials said.

Over 85 lakh private vehicles on city roads

With more than 85 lakh private vehicles, Hyderabad has a vehicle density of around 9,500 per km. The rush peaks between 8:30 am and 11:30 am and again from 5:30 pm to 9 pm, when average speeds fall drastically.

In early 2024, average vehicle speed was 18 kmph, dropping to 17.8 kmph during morning peak hours, as per city traffic data.

Experts warn that traffic congestion has also become a public health concern, with deteriorating air quality and rising stress levels among commuters. Hyderabad is now the sixth most congested city in India.
