Hyderabad braces for monsoon as thunderstorms drench western parts
HYDERABAD: Heavy evening thunderstorms lashed parts of Hyderabad on Saturday, bringing sharp spells of rain, waterlogging and traffic congestion after another day of intense heat.
According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the highest rainfall was recorded in Serilingampally and western parts of the city. Miyapur received 43.8 mm of rain, followed by Shaikpet at 41.8 mm and CB CID Colony in Kukatpally’s Chandanagar circle at 31.3 mm.
Madhapur recorded 29.8 mm, while Mehdipatnam and Golconda received 28.5 mm each.
The showers followed high daytime temperatures across the city. Amberpet registered the highest maximum temperature at 39.8°C. Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam and Chandanagar also recorded temperatures close to the 40°C mark.
The sudden transition from hot afternoon conditions to intense evening storms slowed traffic across western Hyderabad. Congestion was reported in the IT corridor, including Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Miyapur and Jubilee Hills, where the rain coincided with weekend travel.
TGDPS data showed Karwan recorded the highest cumulative average rainfall among Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) circles at 19.7 mm. Mehdipatnam followed with 19.5 mm, while Jubilee Hills recorded 17.9 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Hyderabad is currently witnessing pre-monsoon thunderstorms and not monsoon rainfall.
Temperatures likely to dip over next four days
The IMD said conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of Telangana over the next two to three days.
It has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at several places across the state during the coming week. The weather is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and lightning.
Maximum temperatures are expected to fall by 2°C to 3°C over the next four days.
Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts remain under yellow thunderstorm warnings.
Weather observers said conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Telangana, including Hyderabad, between June 11 and June 13. Until then, residents are likely to experience a familiar pattern of intense daytime heat followed by evening thunderstorms.
