Hyderabad to get three new railway terminals

Listen to Story
Proposed railway terminal details for Nagulapalli, Jukkal and Dabilpur near Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has drawn up plans to construct three major railway terminals around Hyderabad to handle rising passenger traffic from various states.

Cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata already have suburban railway terminals to manage long-distance trains and through services. Similarly, Hyderabad will get three new terminals between the Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road.

A terminal at Charlapalli, on the Warangal route, is already operational. The Railway Board has prioritised new facilities at Nagulapalli in Ramachandrapuram mandal on the Vikarabad–Mumbai line, at Jukkal–Shamshabad on the Mahabubnagar–Bengaluru route, and at Dabilpur–Medchal on the Nizamabad–Nanded line. Officials presented these proposals to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy during a meeting on Thursday.

Pressure on existing stations

Currently, Secunderabad, Nampally and Kacheguda stations are facing heavy congestion. Passengers from city outskirts often spend over an hour reaching these terminals. Platform availability is another challenge, particularly in the mornings. Railways expect the new suburban terminals to ease pressure on central stations while improving passenger convenience.

Terminals proposed

According to Railway estimates, Nagulapalli terminal will have 20 platforms, 14 pit lines and 24 stabling lines on 325 acres of land. It can handle 2,32,160 passengers daily with 325 train services.

The Jukkal terminal will come up on 300 acres with 18 platforms, 12 pit lines and 20 stabling lines. It is designed for 2,08,994 passengers and 250 trains daily.

Dabilpur terminal, on 250 acres, will feature 14 platforms, 10 pit lines and 14 stabling lines. It is planned for 1,62,512 passengers and 575 trains daily.

Future demand

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s population is projected to grow from 1.13 crore in 2025 to 1.84 crore in 2031 and 3.30 crore by 2047. Railway officials said the new facilities are designed to meet the demand from the city’s expanding population and increasing inter-state rail travel.
