HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Growth and Development Responsibility and Accountability Authority (HYDRAA) is giving Thammidikunta lake in Madhapur a major facelift, turning it from a polluted water body into a natural and scenic attraction.

The lake, which once suffered from sewage inflow and garbage dumping, is being restored by clearing encroachments, removing accumulated silt, and expanding its area. After dredging and cleaning, the surroundings have opened up significantly, with a beautified approach road leading from Shilparamam.

HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath inspected the development works on Monday. He reviewed the strengthening of the lake bund, and the construction of inlets and outlets to improve water circulation. He directed officials to develop the lake into a tourist-friendly spot within the city’s IT corridor.

Ranganath also instructed engineers to ensure proper stormwater channels to prevent flooding near Shilparamam. He noted that the lake’s area had been increased from 14 acres to 29 acres and said the focus should be on maintaining adequate water storage across the full extent.

Green, inclusive public space

The commissioner emphasised creating a pleasant environment for the thousands of IT professionals working in the area. He said clean water and surroundings were essential to sustain the restored ecosystem.

Plans include planting trees along the 2-km-long bund to provide shade and improve air quality. Ranganath also proposed developing parks, open gyms, and shaded resting spaces near the main entrance for visitors of all age groups.

He asked officials to design children’s play zones and seating areas for the elderly using stone or cement benches. Small domed shelters will be set up for groups to sit and converse.

Additional Commissioner N Ashok Kumar, HYDRAA ACP Srikant, and several officials accompanied the commissioner during the inspection.
