Hyderabad techie turns weekend traffic volunteer

HYDERABAD:  Most professionals spend weekends relaxing or travelling with family, but Hyderabad resident Lokendra Singh prefers to use his time differently. A software employee by profession, he volunteers to spread awareness about road safety and traffic rules, earning him the nickname ‘Hyderabad Traffic Man’.

Learnt driving, then became curious about road laws

“Our family is originally from Rajasthan. We moved to Hyderabad a few years ago for my father’s business,” said Lokendra. “When I joined a driving school at 18, they only taught how to drive but not about traffic laws. That made me curious about road safety and the Motor Vehicles Act.”

He trained in road safety and basic life support, and later joined as a traffic volunteer under the Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) in 2021. “According to a NITI Aayog survey, about 80% of Indians are literate, but only 1.5% actually understand traffic rules,” he noted.

Conducts safety workshops across the city

Singh and around 15 like-minded volunteers organise awareness camps across Hyderabad, explaining the importance of wearing seat belts, following lane discipline, and obeying stop lines. “Telangana police officials appreciated our work and now even seek our suggestions on traffic management,” he added.

Over the years, he has received several awards from Hyderabad Police for his contributions as a traffic volunteer.
