1. State Central Library

Located on the banks of the Musi River in Afzal Gunj, the State Central Library is one of Hyderabad’s oldest and most significant public libraries. Originally established in 1891 as Kutub Khana Asafia in Abids, it was relocated to its current location in 1936. The building received heritage status from INTACH in 1998 and is part of the 2025 World Monuments Watch list. Spread over 72,247 square yards, the library houses over half a million books and magazines, including rare palm-leaf manuscripts. Despite its rich history, the library faces challenges including poor maintenance, damaged furniture, and an uncatalogued collection.

2. British Council Library

4. City Central Library

Founded in 1960, the City Central Library in Chikkadpally is the second-largest public library in Hyderabad. It sees an average daily footfall of around 1,500 people, including 1,000 students. Open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days except Mondays and public holidays, the library also features an auditorium used for lectures and motivational talks.

5. Sri Krishnadevaraya Telugu Bhasha Nilayam

Established on 1 September 1901, this is one of the oldest non-government libraries in Telangana. Located in Koti, it played a significant role in the nationalist movement against the Nizam’s rule and in promoting the Telugu language. It has been a hub for scholars, politicians, and cultural icons for over a century. The library has celebrated its silver, golden, and centenary jubilees with prominent figures like poet Sripada Krishna Sastry and former Chief Minister Burgula Ramakrishna Rao taking part.
