Hyderabad school students hand over cheque for rhinoceros adoption at Nehru Zoological Park

HYDERABAD: Students of Focus High School in Noor Khan Bazaar, Hyderabad, have adopted a rhinoceros at Nehru Zoological Park, contributing money saved from their daily pocket expenses to support wildlife conservation.

The students visited the zoo on Friday and, along with the school principal and staff, handed over a cheque for ₹30,000 to zoo curator J. Vasantha. They said the amount would meet the cost of feeding and maintaining the animal for three months.

School representatives said the initiative was driven by discussions among students on how small individual contributions could collectively support animal welfare. The students decided to channel their savings towards the zoo’s animal adoption programme.

Speaking on the occasion, curator Vasantha said developing awareness about wildlife conservation and breeding at a young age was a positive sign. He said such initiatives helped children understand the responsibility involved in protecting wild animals.

He appreciated the students for using their pocket money for a public cause and said the gesture would inspire others. Vasantha also appealed to citizens and corporate companies to come forward and participate in animal adoption initiatives at the zoo.

Zoo officials said public participation played an important role in supporting animal care and conservation efforts, particularly in meeting recurring expenses related to food, health and upkeep.
