Police investigation after Hyderabad student suicide linked to online betting loss

HYDERABAD: A 20 year old degree student died by suicide in Rangareddy district after losing ₹1 lakh on an online betting platform, police said on Thursday, December 25.

Vikram, a student of BJR College in Hyderabad, was a resident of Debbadaguda village in Kandukur mandal. Police said he had been using an online betting app, “Fun in Exchange”, without his family’s knowledge and lost ₹1 lakh on the platform on Tuesday.

Consumed pesticide after reprimand

After his father learnt about the loss on Wednesday morning and reprimanded him, Vikram consumed pesticide later that afternoon in an agricultural field. Family members rushed him to a private hospital in Hyderabad, where he died during treatment early Thursday morning.

Corneas donated

Following his death, the body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem. On the recommendation of medical staff, his parents donated his corneas, police said.
