Hyderabad Water Board vigilance removes illegal water connections in SR Nagar

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched a programme to promote efficient use of treated water and strengthen water conservation.

In the Core Urban Region (CURE), government bodies, private residential colonies and industries operate several sewage treatment plants (STPs). The board now encourages them to use treated water for non-potable purposes such as gardening, industrial operations, cleaning and construction.

Mapping private treatment plants to boost reuse

Under the programme, officials will survey, geo-tag and integrate all private STPs into the HMWSSB database. They will record details such as treatment capacity, daily output and water quality parameters, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), pH and total suspended solids (TSS).

STPs that opt in can register as treated water suppliers. The board will inspect these plants regularly to ensure they meet prescribed quality standards.

Online portal for real-time updates

Registered STPs can update treated water availability in real time through an online portal. This system will help improve water use efficiency and ensure supply for nearby needs. It will also allow continuous monitoring of private STPs.

Private STP operators can register through the “Private STP Registration” link under the “Quick Links” section on the HMWSSB website.

Applicants must submit details such as CAN, applicant or society name, STP specifications, water quality data, geo-location, photographs and Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI) certification.
