State Museum to Set Up Fossil Gallery in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The State Museum, supported by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, will establish a new gallery to showcase fossils believed to be 230 million years old that were unearthed during excavations at Bopparam in Mancherial district.
Fossils found in recent SCCL survey
This follows SCCL’s recent discovery of petrified wood fossils during a survey at Bopparam village in Kotapalli mandal.
Officials from the heritage department said nearly three tonnes of wood fossils have been collected from the newly identified site.
Museum to create dedicated fossil gallery
“The fossils will be cleaned and displayed in a separate gallery. In the museum’s 105-year history, a fossil gallery has never been available. SCCL is supporting the project, and cost estimation is underway,” heritage department director Arjun Rao said.
The gallery will also feature interactive kiosks with audio-visual content for visitors.
Re-survey planned for fish fossils
The heritage department has decided to conduct a fresh study of fish fossils found earlier at Vemulapalli village, located 30–40 km from the Bopparam site in Mancherial district. Officials said that dinosaur eggs may also be found in these forested locations. The department has previously identified snail and flower fossils in stretches along the Godavari.
