Hyderabad’s Sr Nagar Residents Protest Against Hostels In Colony

Hyderabad: Amid increasing number of hostels and the issues related to its occupants, the residents of EWS Colony in SR Nagar colony have put up banners stating “No hostels allowed in our colony”.

Economically Weaker Section (EWS) is a type of affordable housing for people with lower household incomes. The residential units in this neighbourhood are built on plots less than 100 square yards. The narrow roads and streets in the colony make it difficult to run any business here.

Lately, several hostels mushroomed in the colony and with it brought its challenges to the local residents. More than 10 hostels have come up in the congested colony and a few more are under construction.

Each housing unit in the colony, which has been converted into hostel or PG accommodation, is now accommodating at least 50 people.

Due to lack of space to relax in the hostels, the occupants end up spending their time late into the night, causing inconvenience to the residents. The narrow lanes filled with the bikes of both the occupants of hostels and the residents have become a huge concern for those who need to navigate the colony.

Residents claimed that they made repeated complaints to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Water Board, and police and so far no action has been taken by the officials. Therefore, they have decided to take the matter in hand and have announced that no hostel will be allowed in their neighbourhood.

They also claimed that these hostels lack necessary approvals from GHMC, the Fire Department, the Water Board and the police. The residents have demanded the authorities to take strict action against unauthorised hostel establishments.
