HYDERABAD: Telangana Labour Minister G. Vivek Venkatswamy on Tuesday said the government will soon begin steps to construct a new Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) hospital at Shamshabad to expand medical services for workers.

He said Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has responded positively to allot land for the project. The cabinet has also approved the construction of 18 Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) dispensaries after receiving reports that the works were being cancelled due to lack of funds.

The minister was speaking at the ESI Foundation Day programme held at the ESI Hospital in Sanathnagar. Principal Secretary Dana Kishore and Regional Director Rajeev Lal were present.

Venkatswamy said the ESI system has successfully conducted organ transplants on par with corporate hospitals. He congratulated organ donors on the occasion.

Corporate hospital fees burden patients

The minister said quality education and healthcare are essential for common citizens at a time when corporate hospitals are charging lakhs of rupees in fees.

He said institutions like ESI provide advanced medical services to workers without charging even ₹1, and doctors must not only treat patients but also offer mental support.

Though government hospitals often face criticism over functioning, he said ESI hospitals have not drawn complaints from the public, reflecting doctors’ commitment.

Venkatswamy said his family shares a close association with labour welfare, recalling that his father served as Union and state labour minister. Compared to the past, ESI hospitals now have improved infrastructure, modern equipment and specialist doctors, he added.

From minor ailments to heart surgeries and organ transplants, ESI provides treatment under one roof, enabling workers to perform their duties with confidence. The government is also planning to establish more modern dispensaries and special wards, especially in industrial areas, to support workers at all times.
