Fake SBI KYC update link causes ₹2.58 lakh loss in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A 58-year-old real estate businessman from Jagadgirigutta lost ₹2.58 lakh after installing a fake mobile application sent through a WhatsApp group impersonating the State Bank of India (SBI).

According to a complaint filed by Janardhan, son of Sangaiah, a resident of Maqdum Nagar, Qutbullapur, he was added on October 18, 2025, to a WhatsApp group titled State Bank of India. The group displayed messages claiming that his wife’s SBI account would be blocked that night for not updating Aadhaar details.

The message urged him to download an Android Package Kit (APK) file named SBI AADHAR UPDATE.apk for Know Your Customer (KYC) verification. Believing it to be genuine, Janardhan entered his wife Jagadamba’s Aadhaar number, debit card details, and CVV in the fake app.

Later, while checking the account balance, he noticed that ₹2,58,000 had been withdrawn in three separate transactions. Realising he had been duped, Janardhan approached the police seeking recovery of the lost amount and legal action against the fraudsters.

Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to identify those behind the fraudulent message and transactions.
