News in short:
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is introducing a new "Bus Information System" to enhance public transport efficiency in Hyderabad. This initiative will involve installing digital boards at bus stops across the city to display real-time information, such as bus number, route, destination, and estimated time of arrival (ETA). The digital boards will be funded through advertising revenue, with a private firm handling the purchase, maintenance, and software development. The initiative is part of a larger plan to modernize bus stops and integrate GPS trackers on public transport buses to provide commuters with a more convenient and informative public transport experience.
Hyderabad: RTC bus stops to sport automated digital boards to track bus location

Hyderabad: Commuters waiting at bus stops will soon be able to track the real-time location of their buses. To enable this facility, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would install digital boards at bus stops across Hyderabad.

The initiative is part of the newly developed ‘Bus Information System’ by the GHMC, which seeks to enhance public transport efficiency in the city. The digital boards are expected to display the bus number, route, destination and estimated time of arrival (ETA).

The civic body covers a total of 10,000 kilometers of roads in the city limits. Of these, city buses ply on nearly 2,000 kilometers of major roads. GHMC has set up around 1,500 bus stops along these routes, while the RTC operates nearly 3,000 city buses on these roads and helps around 2 million people move from one point to the other in the city.

As many bus shelters were built nearly seven years ago, the civic body is also planning to revamp existing bus stops with modern designs. The agency has recently set up 248 new bus stops in the city.

The GHMC and TGSRTC recently deliberated on integrating GPS trackers on the public transport buses. Once the process is completed, these devices will be linked with the digital displays at the bus stops in the city.

This initiative will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The digital boards will be funded through revenue generated from advertisements by the agency. GHMC officials clarified that the private firm will bear the costs of purchasing the boards, maintenance, and software development required for the digital boards integration, according to a press release issued on Monday.
