Customs officials seize hydroponic ganja packets at Hyderabad RGIA

HYDERABAD: Customs officials seized hydroponic ganja worth about ₹4.6 crore at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) and arrested two persons in connection with an international drug trafficking case.

In the early hours of April 7, 2026, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Hyderabad Customs, intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG-329 based on behavioural profiling. A search of his baggage led to the recovery of 22 vacuum-sealed packets containing a green substance.

Tests confirmed the substance as hydroponic ganja, a narcotic drug under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The total net weight of the seized contraband was 13.2 kg. The material was confiscated as per procedure.

Second arrest reveals logistics network behind smuggling

In a follow-up operation on April 8, 2026, officials arrested another individual suspected of organising travel arrangements, logistics and instructions for the smuggling operation. The accused was remanded to judicial custody.

Further investigation is under way.

160 kg seized in current financial year

During the 2025–2026 financial year, Hyderabad Customs seized a total of 160 kg of hydroponic ganja and arrested 30 persons in related cases.
